Frankfurt vs Benfica

Berlin – In-demand Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic hopes to show Benfica what they are missing when he faces his old club in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final clash in Lisbon.

Jovic joined Frankfurt on-loan two years ago after being made surplus to requirements at Benfica. But the 21-year-old has blossomed beyond all expectation in Germany, and is now coveted by Europe’s top clubs.

“Luka is a real goal machine,” Frankfurt coach Adi Huetter told Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung on Tuesday.

At Benfica, Jovic was banished to the reserve team for disciplinary reasons. It has been a different story at Frankfurt, where he has scored 17 goals in 26 league games this season to keep his team on course for a top-four finish.

He scored his seventh Europa League goal at San Siro last month to knock out Inter Milan and set up a last-eight rendez-vous with his former club Benfica.

“As soon as Luka found out that we were playing Benfica, you could see how happy he was,” said Huetter last month.

“To go back and play somewhere where you didn’t make it gives you extra motivation.”

Match Time ,Tomorrow ,3:00Am

Although Jovic is still officially a Benfica player, the Portuguese club cannot hope to profit indirectly from the Serbian’s success.
His loan deal allows Frankfurt to sign him permanently for under 7 million euros ($7.9m). A much smaller fee than what Europe’s top clubs could offer for him.
“Obviously teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City are angling to sign him,” coach Huetter told Kleine Zeitung on Tuesday.
“It’s normal that the big clubs want to fish in our pond.”
For now, however, Jovic hopes to stick it to his former club and move Frankfurt a step closer to the Europa League final in Baku.
If Huetter’s side do get that far, it may scupper their plans for a post-season marketing tour in Asia.
Frankfurt are scheduled to play fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on a week-long trip to China between May 22 and 27. Yet with the Europa League final scheduled for May 29, their plans may change if Jovic fires them to European glory.

White Sox vs Tigers

The Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox square off in game two of their three game AL Central division set in MLB action on Saturday afternoon.

The Detroit Tigers will look to keep their winning streak going which sits at three games after a series opening 4-3 win over Chicago in their last outing. Victor Martinez led the Tigers with two RBIs, while John Hicks went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and Victor Reyes added an RBI of his own to round out Detroit’s scoring in the win. James McCann went 3 for 4 and Leonys Martin added two hits while Nick Castellanos added a base hit as well to cap off Detroit’s offense in the victory. Mike Fiers gave up all three runs on eight hits while striking out four over 5.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Buck Farmer got the win to improve to 2-3 this season, while Shane Greene notched his 18th save of the year. Jordan Zimmermann will start game two and is 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. In his career, Zimmermann is 5-2 with a 5.73 ERA and 30 strikeouts against the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox will look to bounce back after dropping the series opener on Friday. Omar Narvaez went 2 for 3 with a three run home run and a double to account for all three White Sox runs in the loss. Matt Davidson went 3 for 4 and Daniel Palka went 2 for 4, while Omar Sanchez, Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson, Charlie Tilson and Adam Engel each contributed a base hit in the losing effort. Reynaldo Lopez gave up three runs on nine hits while striking out three over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Juan Minaya took the loss, falling to 0-1 this season. Lucas Giolito will start game two and is 4-7 with a 7.09 ERA and 34 strikeouts this season. In his career, Giolito is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 8 strikeouts against Detroit.

Detroit is 16-39 in their last 55 road games and 8-3 in their last 11 Saturday games while the over is 16-5 in Zimmermann’s last 21 division starts. Chicago is 1-5 in Giolito’s last 6 home starts and 5-12 in their last 17 division matchups while the under is 9-0-2 in Giolito’s last 11 division starts. Detroit is 5-2 in Zimmermann’s last 7 starts against the White Sox.

Zimmermann has had a lot of success against the White Sox, but he’s making his first start in over a month after coming off of the DL, so who knows what we will see from him. On the other hand, Giolito has been getting lit up like a Christmas tree for much of the season and the White Sox haven’t been doing much to help the cause. With that said, given the pitching matchup, I’m going to side with the over as I can see both hurlers getting touched up and the total hitting double digits.

Blue Jays vs Twins

The Toronto Blue Jays will look to win the set after dropping game three on Wednesday by a final score of 4-1. Justin Smoak accounted for the lone Toronto RBI and Freddy Galvis went 2 for 4 at the dish while Eric Sogard, Randal Grichuk, Teoscar Hernandez, Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney each had a base knock as none of Toronto’s eight hits as a team went for extra bases in the defeat. Trent Thornton gave up all four runs on six hits while walking and whiffing three apiece over 4.2 innings, taking the loss to fall to 0-2 this season. Clay Buchholz will start game four and is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 2 strikeouts this season. In his career, Buchholz is 4-2 with a 3.76 ERA and 60 strikeouts against Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins will look to salvage a series split after picking up the win in game three on Wednesday. Nelson Cruz led the Twins, going 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs while Marwin Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with an RBI of his own as well in the victory. Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler each doubled with Polanco going 2 for 3 at the dish. C.J. Cron and Jason Castro each had a base hit as well in the winning effort. Jake Odorizzi got the win to improve to 1-2 after allowing one run on six hits while striking out six over 5.2 innings of work. Blake Parker picked up his 4th save of the season by striking out a pair in the 9th. Michael Pineda will start the finale and is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 15 strikeouts this season. In his career, Pineda is 2-4 with a 3.98 ERA and 61 strikeouts against Toronto.

Toronto is 1-7 in their last 8 games against a right-handed starter and 3-7 in their last 10 road games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Minnesota is 14-6 in their last 20 games overall and 37-18 in their last 55 home games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 Thursday games. Toronto is 55-26 in the last 81 meetings between these two teams.

Toronto has been solid in the first two games of the set before regressing to the norm of what we’ve seen from Toronto this season where the offense just sputters. Minnesota took game three, and the Twins have been the better team for most of the early going, but I’m still not keen on laying this kind of juice with Minnesota on a quick turnaround. Instead, I’m going to side with the under. Both pitchers (Pineda and Buchholz) have looked good out of the gate and I’m expecting a game with a lot of zeroes on the board so give me the under in what should be a low scoring affair on getaway day.

Giants vs Nationals

The San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals meet in game two of their three game set from Nationals Park in MLB action on Wednesday night.
The San Francisco Giants will look to pick up some steam after emerging victorious with a 7-3 triumph over Washington in game one on Tuesday. Steven Duggar went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs while Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria each had a solo home run. Kevin Pillar and Gerardo Parra each had two hits with an RBI and a double while Joe Panik chipped in a base hit and an RBI to cap off San Fran’s offense in the winning effort. Dereck Rodriguez got the win to improve to 2-2 this season after allowing one run on five hits while striking out six over five innings of work. Jeff Samardzija will start game two and is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. In his career, Samardzija is 2-8 with a 4.63 ERA and 63 strikeouts against Washington.

The Washington Nationals will look to bounce back after being taken down in game one on Tuesday. Matt Adams belted a pinch-hit solo homer while Stephen Strasburg had a double and an RBI and Anthony Rendon added an RBI as well to round out Washington’s scoring in the win. Adam Eaton and Wilmer Difo each had two hits with a double while Victor Robles added a base knock as well to cap off Washington’s offense in the loss. Strasburg took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year after allowing four runs on six hits while striking out eight over six innings of work. Jeremy Hellickson will start game two and is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hellickson is 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA and 16 strikeouts against the Giants.
San Francisco is 0-5 in Samardzija’s last 5 road starts and 7-21 in their last 28 road games while the over is 4-1 in Samardzija’s last 5 starts against the NL East. Washington is 4-0 in Hellickson’s last 4 home starts and 5-1 in their last 6 games following a loss while the over is 16-6 in their last 22 games overall. San Francisco is 0-5 in Samardzija’s last 5 starts against Washington.
This is a matchup that features two pitchers that have been pretty good out of the gate, but the difference for me is that Washington has the more trustworthy offense, and Samardzija hasn’t had much luck in his career against the Nationals. San Francisco paid off on Tuesday and it blew up in my face by backing Washington, but we aren’t getting enough plus money to take a stab with the Giants and the price isn’t too bad with Hellickson, so I’ll side with the Nationals to pull even on Wednesday.
